SWAN TALES Vol #2 February 2011

Caribbean Regattas Swan Board in the Caribbean - All three SOA Board members are in the Caribbean. David Frazier aboard Clover III, a Swan 56, recently placed 3rd in IRC 2 in the Pineapple Cup. The only Swan in the small fleet this year. Well Done David and Neal Finnegan. Hank Schmitt is sailing the Swan 48 Avocation in the BVI's for three weeks and then sailing to Dominica for a week before heading back to St. Maarten for her 7th Heineken Regatta in a row. Third in Performance Cruiser Division last year. If you are sailing in the regatta we are in slip b34 at Simpson bay Marina so please come say hello or just give us a friendly holler on the racecourse. We expect to see Clover III there next month as well. After the Heineken Regatta she will be back to the BVI for the Annual Swan Rendezvous. Last week, Hank met with Steve DeVoe aboard his classic Power Boat "Nettie" on Jost Van Dyke. Steve and business partner at JBY Clem will once again be the race committee boat for the Swan Rendezvous next month. They do a great job. SOA Summer Rendezvous - Last month we alerted SOA members to the dates for the bi-annual American Swan rendezvous. Since Club Swan in Europe stopped organizing the event after 2007, the SOA stepped up and ran a very successful event in 2009 with 26 boats. SOA President Bob Schribner along with Ray Peterson's wife Erika did most of the legwork and did a great job. As mentioned last month we have kept the traditional dates as the last weekend in July and are introducing a couple of new stops to get us out of Narragansett Bay. IGY Marina in Montauk NY will be the starting point with a cocktail reception on Wednesday Night July 27th. They are waiving the resort fee of $15.00 a day and the event site fee and discounting dockage $1.00 per foot. They are also offering a $100 discount for dockside villas if you wish to get accommodations ashore for extra crew or family for Wednesday and Thursday night ($399 rather than $499). Swan owners that would like to bring their boats to Montauk the Sunday before will get FREE dockage for two days (Monday and Tuesday) for the first two boats that request early arrival. (Boats under 60 ft only). IGY Marina Group is being very generous at the height of the season. IGY Marina, besides owning several marinas in the Caribbean also run a Marina in Boston and NY harbor. Formal invitation for the event will not be mailed until late in April since we are in the Caribbean, but next month we plan to have a firmer itinerary and idea of the entry fee. Our plan to run the event as an all inclusive including all meals and open bar (at least to a certain limit) so you do not need to open your wallet outside of paying for dockage. Since setting the dates we have learned that the NYYC cruise starts the weekend after our event so boats that have a conflict will have the option to join us from Wednesday until Saturday morning if they wish to start their summer cruise with us in Montauk on Wednesday the 27th and sail to Block with us on Friday and then either complete the Rendezvous through Sunday or join the NYYC that starts on Saturday the 30th. Last summer JBY ran an interim mini-Swan regatta which was fun, (All three Board members attend) but there is nothing sillier looking than a Swan race towing dinghies. Most of the Caribbean Rendezvous races also have us towing dinghies. However one of the advantages of this summers American Swan Regatta is that, besides leaving your horses at home, you can also not bring your dinghy. We will be dockside in Montauk and Block Island runs launch service even from boats anchored. In Jamestown and Newport we also have launch service. There will be three races this summer, split into racer and cruiser divisions for those that will be sailing with family and not have their race crew. Next month we will have a report from the Heineken regatta and the Swan rendezvous which ends later than our March 15th deadline so Swan tales # 03 will be delayed until after the Rendezvous. Regards, Hank Schmitt SOA
