Editorial – The SOA (Swan Owners Association) has kept up the tradition of the bi-Annual Swan American Regatta and the Swan Dinner after the Newport Bermuda Race because Club Swan in Europe could not. We are happy to continue the tradition and organize an event a year as an excuse to get together with other Swan Owners. We always have and will continue to attend and support the Swan BVI Winter Rendezvous and sail in the Swan Worlds whenever we can. The present board of Steve DeVoe, David Frazier and Hank Schmitt have participated in four Swan Worlds, fifteen BVI Rendezvous, and several Swan Regattas in Newport and Dinners in Bermuda. We all love the Swan Brand and want to carry on the Tradition. We believe that Club Swan will again soon support our small itinerary and join us in keeping the Swan Traditions alive.
We will pass on information about the Club Swan Worlds in September and the Caribbean winter Rendezvous. Soon we will pick dates for the bi-annual summer Rendezvous next summer 2013. Until then my only other main goal for the rest of my two year term is leaving Steve and the new board in decent financial shape.
Newport to Bermuda SOA Dinner - Swan was well represented in the 2012 Newport to Bermuda race with 23 boats entered, second only to J-Boats. What J and no other manufacturer can boast is the Tradition of a Class Dinner in Bermuda. This was my third dinner and second as host. We had a full house at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, a short walk from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Crews from ten of the participating boats gathered for sunset drinks and awards dinner. The dinner has been hosted and organized by the Swan Owners of America Association with sponsorship from Jamestown Boat Yard and Offshore Passage Opportunities.
The Hall Trophy, given to the best Swan finish in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division was won by Stephen Kylander and the crew of “Dreamcatcher” an S & S 48. The SOA award for best finish in the Cruising Division was won by Glen Dexter and the crew of “Odyssey”. Keith Yeoman from Nautor Swan Newport USA was in attendance to give out the "The Swan East American Challenge Trophy" to James Madden and the crew of “Stark Raving Mad”, a Swan 601 that will be going to Sardinia for the Swan Worlds in September.
